New Beacon Cruise - October 2013
“An Autumn Adventure”
Not even St Jude could dampen the enthusiasm of the 43 boys and 6 staff members who set off at 2.30am for Gatwick Airport on the 28th October to start their long-awaited cruise on the Mediterranean Sea to Turkey (Bodrum, Kushadasi and Ephesus), Israel (Ashdod, the Sea of Galilee, River Jordan and Jerusalem) and Greece (Rhodes, Lindos and Athens).
The New Beacon boys thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to socialise with boys and girls from other schools, as well as cementing their friendships with their own school mates. The boys certainly learnt to deal with being away from home and managing their own affairs, such as keeping their cabins tidy, arriving on time for meals, meetings, lectures and more importantly, their budgeting skills! In Kushadasi and Rhodes, another admirable trait surfaced; the art of haggling with the traders. This is an art perfected by New Beacon boys on tour!
The boys were complimented by various people, including the captain of the mv Discovery, for their exemplary manners.
There is an old adage amongst the sporting fraternity that, “what goes on tour stays on tour”. Well this is not the case with the “Autumn Adventure” cruise – there is so much to tell and I’m sure that parents have only heard half of the adventure.
My sincerest thanks to all the “cruise parents” for your support throughout the planning phases of this cruise; to the boys – it was a pleasure to witness your enjoyment of the cruise and lastly and certainly not least, to Mesdames Hunter and Greensmyth-Jones and Messrs Presnell, Bartlett and Smit – a huge debt of gratitude for your assistance and support. This cruise could not have been the success that it was without your input!
